When we asked Kristen to describe her wedding day in one sentence she said, “Our wedding was an elegant Southern celebration of our love and commitment to one another surrounded by our closest family and friends.” With only 57 guests, Kristen and Davis did just that! Tell us your love story. When I moved from Philadelphia to Birmingham, I only knew one person in the entire state of Alabama. She and I would frequently have lunch or cocktails and eventually the topic of eligible bachelors in Birmingham came up during conversation. I will never forget that she said to me ” of all of my husband’s friends, there is only ONE i would recommend to you. His name is Davis.” A few weeks later, my friend and her husband were hosting an Auburn Football watch party and she informed me that Davis would be there. However, upon arrival, I was told that Davis had a work emergency and had to head to the office instead of attending the party. A month later, Auburn was headed to the NCAA Championship in Pasadena, Florida and my friend asked if I wanted to attend with her, her husband and Davis. Unfortunately, I had a work conference scheduled for that exact date and had to decline the invitation. Still having not met, Davis requested a picture of me from our friend and I sent 8-10 acceptable shots to her. Needless to say, his interest was peaked and he assured her that he would reach out to me upon their return from California. Fast forward two weeks and I still had not received a call from Davis and had forgotten about him, to be honest. I was traveling to Jackson, MS for business and had a 3-hour drive ahead of me. As I got into the car, an unknown Alabama number popped up on my phone. I answered and it was Davis. We talked for 3 full hours and to this day, I lovingly recall how he made sure I made it home safely as I was both entertained and alert for the long drive after a very long work trip. At the end of the call, Davis promised to contact me again soon and as promised called the following day only this time, he requested a date that upcoming Saturday. What I fondly recall is that he already had the entire date planned out prior to me even accepting and laid out the details, all of which sounded fun upon my acceptance of the invitation. The night of our date, he arrived 10 minutes early (the last time he has ever been early for ANYTHING) and we had the funnest date I’ve ever been on. While the events (dinner, a comedy show and after drinks) were great, what made the night memorable was the easy conversation that never ended, we discovered we had so many things in common from the exact same birthday (5/7…he’s 3 years to the DAY older than me) to our love of social events and outdoor activities. We laughed and talked for hours after the comedy show and from that point on, we were pretty much inseparable!
How did you prepare for marriage? I definitely had a few “moments and activities” that I wanted us to experience together prior to marriage, to include multiple family gatherings, domestic and international travel and also premarital counseling. Davis attended my sister’s wedding as my date, we spent the holidays with his family and then Christmas with mine. We traveled to Mexico as well as a dozen cities in the US and always had such wonderful trips. It was also extremely important to both of us that we begin and complete premarital counseling, which we did, as well as went through numerous “Questions to ask prior to Marriage” type books.
What is your favorite thing about being married? My favorite thing about being married to Davis is laughing with him daily, the knowledge of having a supportive partner who is equally committed to the success of our relationship and the growth of our love and family.
